Bins & Reclycling
When is bin day?
Bin day is currently Thursday from 7am, with most residents putting rubbish out on Wednesday evenings. For detailed collection dates and special times of the year, check your address on the council website.
Where should I put my rubbish for collection?
Rubbish is to be places in Shipgate Street, near the entrance gate.
However, some Shipgate residents have arranged an assisted service with the council. This means they can leave their bags and boxes outside their front door and do not need to carry rubbish down the courtyard steps. Apply here.
Can I use bags or boxes?
You can use either. You may have recycling boxes when you move in, or if the previous owner preferred bags, you can ask the council for replacements here.
All recycling boxes must be kept inside residents' properties, or inside their bin cupboard.
Apartment owners in the city centre are allowed to request blue recycling bags from the council. These are easier to store, fit more recycling in and allow multiple bags to be thrown away. The council website form does not give blue bags as an option, but city centre residents can ask for these on 0300 123 7026 or at the council Customer Service Centre.
Non-recyclable waste can go into regular black bin liners.
What about large items?
Large items can be taken to Chester Recycling Centre or bulky item collection can be arranged. Items are to be kept inside residents' properties until disposal and not in shared communal areas.
